What are Cheek Implants?
Dr. Joseph uses many types of facial implants for the correction of cosmetic or reconstructive problems. The most common facial implants are for chin and cheek enhancement. These implants are available in various materials including surgical Silicone® and Gortex®. These implants are anatomically designed for specific areas. They feel natural and the infection or rejection rate is extremely low. Cheek implants can rejuvenate the aging midface and can also be used to treat midface deficiency.
Cheek Implants
The cheekbone (malar bone) can be enhanced or augmented using an implant placed through a small incision inside the mouth. This is usually performed for deficiency of the cheekbone or midface and to reverse the effects of aging. Cheek implant surgery can be performed in the office with local anesthesia and IV sedation. You will usually return to normal activities within 5-7 days.
Cheek Implants for Facial Aging
Young people have fat distribution and volume in the face that gives a “youthful” look. As we age, this fat atrophies (shrinks) and sags and produces a hollow and aged appearance. Restoring the midface volume with implants can reverse these changes and make us look younger.

Submalar Implants
Submalar implants provide augmentation of the sunken part of the cheek under the eye and to the side of the nose. Submalar implants do little for cheekbone augmentation, but are ideal for rejuvenating the midface. The implants are placed through tiny incisions inside the mouth.
Malar Shell and Combined Implants
Malar shell implants augment the actual malar bone (cheekbone) area for patients desiring more fullness in this area. The combined implant augments the entire midface and is a combination of the submalar implant and the malar shell implant.
